The AR-15 market is packed with options, but not many rifles come in around the $350 mark. That's where the Bear Creek Arsenal 18" right-side charging handle AR-15 comes in. The question is simple: is this a solid budget rifle, or just another cheap gimmick?
First Impressions
For testing, I paired the rifle with a Vortex Strike Eagle LPVO and got it sighted in before putting rounds downrange.
Early on, the rifle impressed me. At 25 yards, the rounds were basically touching, and at 50 yards it was ringing steel consistently, even during rapid fire. The rifle cycled reliably and gave me no issues during the initial range session.
Accuracy
Once I stretched things out to 100 and 200 yards, the rifle continued to perform fairly well for its price point.
The 100-yard group was respectable, especially considering the factory trigger. I definitely threw one shot due to shooter error, and the trigger isn't doing anyone favors when it comes to precision shooting.
Would a nicer trigger tighten groups? Absolutely.
But for a rifle that costs less than many optics, the results were hard to complain about.
What I'd Upgrade
The rifle works as-is, but there are a few things I'd change almost immediately:
- Replace the stock with a B5 Systems or Magpul stock
- Swap the grip for something more comfortable
- Upgrade to a lighter trigger, preferably a two-stage trigger
- Add a bipod or vertical grip depending on intended use
The good news is that even after adding a few upgrades, you're still looking at a rifle that comes in well below what many factory ARs cost.
Final Verdict
For under $400, the Bear Creek Arsenal 18" AR-15 is honestly a pretty decent value.
Is it perfect? No.
The stock, grip, and trigger leave plenty of room for improvement. But the rifle was reliable, reasonably accurate, and did exactly what I expected a budget AR to do.
If you're looking for an affordable entry into the AR-15 world or just want a project rifle to upgrade over time, the Bear Creek Arsenal 18" is worth considering.
Spend a couple hundred dollars on upgrades, and you'll still be into the rifle for less than many competitors charge right out of the box.
