The PSA JAKL .308 has gotten a lot of mixed reviews online. Some people love it, others say it's overhyped. So I took mine out with a 3-18x scope and suppressor to see how it actually performs at 50, 100, and 200 yards.
Spoiler alert: I came away more impressed than I expected.
First Impressions
For this setup, I ran:
- PSA JAKL .308 (16" barrel)
- 3-18x Kyber Optics scope
- Suppressor
- Winchester White Box .308
I normally run an LPVO on rifles like this, but for testing accuracy, I wanted more magnification to really see what the rifle could do at distance.
The first thing that stood out was the recoil, or lack of it.
For a .308, the JAKL is surprisingly soft shooting. The rifle has some weight to it, which definitely helps keep recoil manageable, especially when shooting suppressed.
Accuracy Testing
50 Yards
After getting the rifle zeroed, my initial group was roughly the size of my pinky.
For a rifle that many people label as a "budget SCAR," that was a pretty good start.
100 Yards
The 100-yard groups stayed respectable, hovering right around MOA territory.
Could they have been tighter? Probably.
I was shooting inexpensive Winchester white box ammo and running the factory single-stage trigger, so there's definitely room for improvement.
200 Yards
At 200 yards, the JAKL continued to perform well.
The groups opened up a bit, but they were still more than acceptable for a practical .308 rifle. Some of that was likely shooter error, some was ammo selection, and some was simply stretching the rifle out.
Overall, I was happy with what I saw.
Features I Like
The JAKL has a few features that really stand out:
- Adjustable gas block that's easy to tune
- Side charging handle
- Folding/collapsible stock
- Reliable suppressed performance
- Lighter than many AR-10 setups
The adjustable gas block was especially nice. Getting the rifle tuned for suppressed use only took a few adjustments.
The Suppressor Cover Incident
If you've watched my channel before, you've probably seen me complain about cheap suppressor covers.
Well, it happened again.
My budget suppressor cover launched itself about ten feet downrange during testing. Shockingly, the cheap Amazon gear continues to perform like cheap Amazon gear.
Lesson learned.
The Optic
The 3-18x optic actually performed pretty well.
The eye relief gets a little tight at maximum magnification, but that's not unusual in this price range. No, it's not a Nightforce, but it also doesn't cost Nightforce money.
For hunting, range work, or general shooting, it gets the job done.
JAKL vs AR-10
One thing worth mentioning is weight.
Compared to many AR-10s, the JAKL comes in roughly a couple pounds lighter depending on setup. That's noticeable if you're carrying the rifle for extended periods.
The folding stock also makes it easier to transport and store than a traditional AR-10.
Final Thoughts
After hearing all the debates online, I expected to either love or hate the JAKL.
Instead, I landed somewhere simple:
It's just a really solid rifle.
It's accurate enough for most shooters, surprisingly comfortable to shoot, works well suppressed, and comes with features that many rifles charge significantly more for.
Would I still like to test more ammo through it? Absolutely.
But based on this range trip, the PSA JAKL .308 exceeded my expectations.
